Yahoo! has acquired the mobile news reader app Summly for $30 million. The app was created a couple of years ago by a 15-year-old English guy Nick D'Aloisio. Summly's trick is that it automatically creates a summary containing the most important information from the long text of each news item. The summary size is up to 400 characters (slightly longer than a Twitter message). To do this, the app highlights key sentences in the text that convey the main idea. According to Nick, the app uses genetic algorithms that imitate human thinking. However, these algorithms were not invented by Nick - they were acquired from SRI - the same company that created Siri and sold it to Apple.
