2026. Canva's AI assistant can now create designs in context of website and business apps

Canva has updated its AI assistant, which now uses its proprietary Lucid Origin model to create editable designs in dialog mode and with integrated tools. As part of this update, Canva has added integrations with Slack, Gmail, Google Drive, Calendar, and Zoom, allowing AI bot to gather context by reading emails, conversations, files, and meeting details. The AI assistant also gets web search capabilities, allowing it to browse websites and gather context. The assistant now uses layers to create designs, giving users the flexibility to customize various aspects of the final product. The AI code generator can now import HTML, and users can use text suggestions to describe the types of spreadsheets they want to create. The company also claims that the new Lucid Origin model is now 5 times faster and 30 times cheaper.
2026. Anthropic unveiled AI-powered design builder

Anthropic has introduced a new (experimental) service, Claude Design, which allows to create designs, like website templates, app interfaces or presentation slides. The company states that Claude Design is designed to help entrepreneurs and product managers without design experience more easily share their ideas and create prototypes. User describes their wishes in chat, and Claude will create an initial version. The design can then be refined in conversation mode or independently in a simple editor. After finishing the creative, you can export it as a PDF, URL, or PPTX, or send it to Canva for further development. In Canva, the design will be fully editable. The new product is available to Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise subscribers.
2026. Mobile and online Photoshop get AI assistant

Adobe has introduced an AI assistant for the web and mobile versions of Photoshop. It can help remove objects from images, change colors, or adjust lighting using text prompts. The new AI Markup feature allows users to draw markers on the screen and use the AI assistant to transform these objects. For example, you can draw a flower or mark an object for removal to change the background. Also new is the Generative Fill feature, which has been present in desktop Photoshop for several years, for replacing or adding objects and changing the background accordingly. Furthermore, a tool for removing backgrounds from images with one click has been added. All of this is powered by Photoshop's proprietary Firefly graphics model, which offers unlimited queries for paid users.
2026. Canva acquired animation and video ad generation startups

Graphic design platform Canva has acquired 2D animation software Cavalry and advertising video generation startup Mango AI. Canva plans to fully integrate these tools into its professional Affinity suite, which already includes editors for raster, vector graphics, and layout. This will create unified "Creative OS" for designers, implementing a closed-loop content production cycle: from creating static images and vectors in Affinity to complex 2D animation and subsequent analytical optimization of advertising launches. These acquisitions come amid a significant shift in the balance of power in the graphic software market, where Canva and Figma continue to actively attract millions of users thanks to the integration of AI solutions. Morgan Stanley analysts have already noted that Adobe's professional tools are facing significant pressure from platforms that prioritize automation and accessibility.
2025. Photoshop integrated into ChatGPT

ChatGPT users can now edit images using Adobe's suite of tools thanks to the launch of a new chatbot integration with Adobe Photoshop. Now, by generating prompts using natural language, you can edit photos, for example, by fine-tuning details, blurring the background and applying custom effects. ChatGPT users can also access Adobe Express, the company's all-in-one content creation tool and Adobe Acrobat document manager directly in chats, with the ability to generate and edit PDFs or customize existing documents with your personal information.
2025. Photoshop gets AI tools for resizing and injecting objects

Adobe has added new image editing and enhancement features to Photoshop based on the Firefly AI model. The Generative Upscale feature allows to improve the image resolution up to 8 megapixels. This is useful for restoring details in old photos, scaling images for printing or adapting assets for different platforms. The Harmonize feature allows you to place a new object in a scene, remove its background, adjust the colors, lighting and shadows to match the object to the scene. The idea is to make the new object, such as a chair in a room, fit harmoniously into the environment. Adobe has also introduced an improved Object Removal tool. Previously, when using generative fill to remove an object, the tool took into account the entire scene to fill the gap left by the removed object, which sometimes led to unwanted artifacts in the image. The company has reworked the algorithm so that it focuses only on removing the object locally.
2025. Google launched AI service for UI design

Google has launched Stitch, an AI-powered tool that helps design web and mobile app interfaces. Stitch can be asked to create an app's UI using a text prompt or even an image. The tool supports direct export to Figma and can provide code for refinement and interaction in the IDE. However, while Stitch is powerful, it is not intended to be a full-fledged design platform like Figma or Adobe XD.
2025. Figma released AI-based website builder

Figma has unveiled AI-powered site and web app creation tool called Figma Sites, designed for marketers to create assets in bulk. With this launch, the company is taking on website and prototype creators such as WordPress, Wix, Hostinger and Replit. The new tool allows to create websites using text prompts and even publish them. Once the site is generated, collaborators can easily change elements of the site through an editor without prompting. Users can also add transitions, animations and scroll effects to make site responsive. Figma is also adding the ability to directly generate blog posts from its site. That means the Sites will have a content management system (CMS), which is an upcoming feature, baked in that lets users edit posts within the design of a blog and also manage other assets such as thumbnails and slugs.
2025. Canva gets AI image generation and AI-assisted coding

Design platform Canva is adding a suite of new AI features called Canva AI, that includes an AI assistant, the ability to create apps with prompts, support for spreadsheets and AI-powered editing tools. The AI assistant can perform a host of tasks, from creating images according to your instructions, to coming up with design ideas — say, collateral for social media or mock-ups for printing. Another tool Canva Code can be prompted to create mini-apps, like interactive maps or custom calculators, that can then be integrated in designs. One more tool allows users to point and click to modify artifacts in photos, generate background or change its lighting and layout. This feature set seems aimed at helping the company compete with Adobe Photoshop that is actively adding such AI-tools.
2025. Google's Gemini 2.0 Flash now allows to edit images

Google'sGemini 2.0 Flash model (which runs on Google AI Studio) now enables image editing using natural language. Unlike earlier multimodal systems that used a combination of separate models (for example, using a language model alongside Imagen 3 to generate images), Gemini 2.0 Flash operates multimodally, generating images directly in the same system that processes text. This eliminates the need for cross-model communication, significantly reducing latency. Because Gemini 2.0 Flash no longer relies on Imagen 3, it has faster response times and a smoother experience. You can even add long text directly to images!
2024. Photoshop adds AI tool for generating vector shapes
Adobe has expanded the AI functionality of its Photoshop and Illustrator. Photoshop now features new text tools and new brushes, while Illustrator introduces generative vector fill. The company believes these new features will accelerate everyday creative processes and give users more control. Photoshop will feature a new Selection Brush and Adjustment Brush to simplify repetitive tasks. The contextual taskbar and the Type tool have been improved. Adobe Firefly, the AI image generator, has been updated to the latest version. Additionally, generative shape fill in Adobe Illustrator will allow users to apply vector graphics by entering text suggestions in the contextual taskbar.
2023. OpenAI unveiled DALLE 3 model with ChatGPT integration

OpenAI has unveiled a new version of its image-generating neural network, DALLE 3. The key new feature of DALLE 3 is its integration with ChatGPT, another OpenAI product that specializes in text processing. Now, users can simply describe the desired image, and ChatGPT will generate an optimal query for DALLE 3. If the result is unsatisfactory, the chatbot will help adapt the query to improve the results. The team also prioritized copyright compliance. The neural network will no longer create images that imitate the style of modern artists to avoid copyright infringement. However, stylizations in the style of classical artists such as Van Gogh or Munch are still possible.
2023. Adobe launches Photoshop’s web version with Firefly-powered AI tools

In a move that could only be described as the most delightfully inevitable digital evolution since the invention of the scrollbar, Adobe has finally released the official web version of Photoshop for those who’ve willingly tethered themselves to a paid plan, following nearly two years of diligent beta wandering. This web-based marvel now comes equipped with Firefly-powered AI tools, like “generative fill” and “generative expand,” which are nestled comfortably in the toolbar, keenly focused on guiding users through peculiar workflows involving image reproduction and object selection. Amusingly, rather than relying on cryptic tooltips, Photoshop on the web insists on plainly displaying the full names of its tools—perhaps in a rare burst of cosmic kindness toward bewildered beginners. To add a dash of collaborative chaos, Adobe has also ensured that sharing file links is now possible with other users, regardless of whether they’ve succumbed to the subscription model, thus encouraging a sense of teamwork that’s as effortless as it is unexpected.
2023. Adobe brings Firefly’s generative AI to Photoshop
Photoshop is receiving an infusion of generative AI through the integration of several Firefly-based features. These new additions empower users to expand images beyond their boundaries by incorporating Firefly-generated backgrounds. Additionally, generative AI can now be utilized to seamlessly insert objects into images, while a new generative fill feature enables more precise removal of objects compared to the previous content-aware fill option. Initially, these features will be exclusive to the beta version of Photoshop. Moreover, Adobe is extending some of these capabilities to Firefly beta users on the web. It's worth noting that Firefly users have already generated over 100 million images using the service.
2023. Midjourney - AI for image generation

Midjourney is a generative neural network that can create images based on a user-provided text description. These images can be used in blogs, social media, media outlets, and even for commercial purposes (though the service retains copyright on the images you generate). Midjourney is currently only available through a Discord bot. Users can generate images by directly communicating with the bot on the official Midjourney server or by inviting the bot to a third-party server. While this neural network can't yet replace a human designer, it can handle simple tasks that don't require high precision and accuracy.
2022. Microsoft unveiled simple graphic design app Designer

Microsoft unveiled Designer, a service built on OpenAI's DALL-E 2 neural network that generates images based on text descriptions and edits existing ones. For example, the website states that users can enter a description of an image or design and then use it in their project. The service will also offer ready-made templates, images, and shapes for design creation. Once the app is generally available, it will be free for Microsoft 365 subscribers.
