2025. Zoom added AI assistant to free web version.

Zoom has added its AI Companion to the web version and gave free users access to its features, such as a meeting summary, in-meeting questions and AI-powered note-taking. However, there is a limitation: free users can only use the AI Companion for three meetings per month. They can purchase an additional plan for $10 to access unlimited AI Companion's features. With this update, the Companion can also retrieve information from third-party services such as Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive, as well as all data stored within Zoom. The company said it will soon add support for Gmail and Microsoft Outlook. The AI Companion also generates a daily report summarizing meetings, tasks and updates. Furthermore, the Companion can also create tasks for later follow-up and draft emails.
2024. Google Meet will now take notes for you

Google Meet will now take notes for you in meetings with a new Gemini AI-driven feature called "Take notes for me," which is comparable to competitor options like Zoom Notes or OtterPilot. It leverages AI to create a summary after your meeting. Once the meeting concludes, a document will be attached to the Google Calendar event and the meeting admin will receive an emailed link to it (it will also be stored in the organizer's Drive). If anyone activates meeting recording or transcription during the same meeting, a link to this will be included in the document. Meetings must be held in spoken English for the "Take notes for me" feature to function.
2021. Google Meet limits free group call time to 60 minutes

Google opened up free access to its video conferencing service Meet in April 2020 with no time limit to help people and businesses continue working during the pandemic. But apparently unaware that the pandemic is still ongoing in some places, the company decided to cut off the freebie. Now, calls with three or more participants in Google Meet are limited to 60 minutes in the free version. To remove the time limit on group calls, Google offers a subscription starting at $5.40 per user per month. The price depends on the maximum number of participants in the meeting and other additional features.
2020. Google Meet will not limit calls on free plans until March

Google is extending its promotion allowing users of Google Meet to hold calls longer than 60 minutes for free. The unlimited free calling promotion was set to expire on September 30, but has now been extended until March 2021. The extension should come as a relief to those who relied on the service during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year, Google has been steadily updating Google Meet to keep it competitive with other video conferencing services like Zoom, adding features like gallery view (which can now display up to 49 people at a time) and background blur.
2020. Google is opening free access to its video conferencing service Meet.

Google has finally made a bold move and will launch (starting May 1st) a free version of its video conferencing service Google Meet. Until now, it was only available to paid G Suite users. The free version allows video conferences with up to 100 participants lasting up to 60 minutes (and unlimited until September 1st). This is clearly a dig at Zoom, which has a 40-minute, 100-participant limit. Various window layouts are available, including Zoom-style layouts, screen sharing, document editing, a mobile version, and organization via Google Calendar. Google also emphasizes the security of its service, alluding to Zoom's ongoing problems with hacks. Video streams and meeting recordings on Google Drive are encrypted. To participate in a video conference, you need to log in with a Google account.
2020. Verizon is buying B2B videoconferencing firm BlueJeans

US carrier Verizon has splashed out to buy veteran B2B videoconferencing platform, BlueJeans Network for less than $500 million. Videoconferencing platform Blue Jeans has raised ~$175M since being founded around a decade ago. The acquisition comes at a time when videoconferencing is seeing a massive uptick in usage as white collar workers around the world log on to meetings from home during the coronavirus pandemic.Although it’s BlueJeans’ rival, Zoom, that’s been the most high profile name linked to the viral videoconferencing boom in recent weeks.
2020. Zadarma launches free video conferencing

Telephony platform Zadarma has introduced a new free video conferencing service. To create a video conference, log in to your Zadarma account, create a new room, and send a link to participants. They can connect via a browser or the Zadarma Conf mobile app, available for Android and iOS. According to the website description, up to 50 people can participate in a video meeting for free. The call time is unlimited. HD quality, video stream encryption, and the ability to customize the video quality for each participant based on their internet bandwidth are provided. Features such as chat, screen sharing, and a raise-hand function are available. Overall, the description sounds too good to be true.
2020. Jitsi - free, open-source alternative to Zoom for p2p video conferencing

Jitsi is a video conferencing application that can be easily installed on your own server. Jitsi Meet allows communication via a web browser on a PC or laptop, or via the Android and iOS app. A single conference can accommodate up to 75 participants, although the developers currently recommend adding no more than 35 participants to maintain connection stability. If you need to connect more viewers, you can organize a video broadcast as a YouTube stream. For one-on-one communication, the system uses a peer-to-peer connection. Among the platform's key features are its complete free service and the availability of features that require a premium subscription in other services. These include live streaming and the integration of Jitsi meetings with Google Calendar and Office 365.
2014. GoToMeeting Free Version Released

GoToMeeting is one of the most popular services for video calls, online presentations and webinars. Even though our companies have to pay for it with a credit card, they still pay and use it. Apparently, connection quality is so important to users that they don't want to skimp on it. Citrix recently released a free version of the service GoToMeeting Free, which allows online meetings with up to three participants. The application is based on the Chrome browser and requires no registration, downloading additional software, or installing special extensions. You simply click the "Start Meeting" button and receive a link that you can send to one or two colleagues. However, this service is purely for video chat. It does not include any of the collaboration tools for which GoToMeetings is famous.
2012. WebEx Meetings is lowering its free limits again

Cisco Webex, the web conferencing service, initially delighted its users with free Webex Meetings offer, but then disappointed them twice. Today, the service exited beta and, to celebrate, lowered its free limits again. The number of online meeting participants in the free version (now called Basic) has been reduced from 25 to 3. And disk space for files has been reduced from 1 GB to 250 MB. Remote computer control in screen-sharing sessions has also been removed from the free version.
2012. ooVoo - free cross-platform video chat for up to 12 users
Israeli video conferencing service ooVoo is perhaps becoming the most attractive solution for companies looking to host multi-user video conferences without paying for it. As we know, Skype made group video calling a paid service. Then came Google Hangouts, which offers free video calling for up to 10 participants. However, it only works in a browser (specifically, in Google+) and on Android. The new version of ooVoo, however, offers free video chat for up to 12 participants. Moreover, ooVoo works on PC, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android (both smartphones and tablets), and via a web interface in a browser. The new iPad client supports four-way HD video calling. Furthermore, ooVoo has released a Facebook app, so users of this social network can skip the hassle of registration and software installation.
2012. Free WebEx is now available.

Web conferencing service WebEx has unveiled free version. However, the number of conference hosts (i.e. users who can create and administer online meetings) has been reduced from 3 to 1. However, the free disk space limit has been increased to 1 GB. Up to 25 people can participate in an online meeting simultaneously and use a variety of tools: screen sharing, whiteboard, remote computer control, file sharing, presentations, VoIP, HD video, and conference recording. You might be surprised to learn that the service is currently in Beta status (after all, WebEx has been the market leader in web conferencing for many years). The fact is, this is not just a free version. This is a new version of WebEx, which, in addition to web conferencing, also includes a collaboration space (before and after the online meeting). There, you can not only schedule web conferences and invite participants, but also share materials before the online meeting and discuss them with colleagues. And after the virtual meeting, you can share conference recordings and files created during it and continue the discussion.
