2025. Slack adds AI to search, transcripts and chat summary

Enterprise messaging app Slack has expanded its search capabilities with AI features, including voice message transcripts and chat summaries, as well as short AI summaries of channels and discussions. Using AI, Slack now lets you search across chat channels, as well as connected apps (like Google Drive, Salesforce and Microsoft Teams). Huddles (voice and video chat features) also includes call transcripts and summaries. The AI automatically highlights key phrases in conversations. You can also get a short summary of another user’s profile, showing their role and recent work. Or get a summary of all the messages in which you are mentioned.

2023. Microsoft Adds Bing Chatbot to Skype

Microsoft has added the Bing chatbot (which runs on the same model as ChatGPT) to its ever-live messenger Skype. The chatbot can be added to any group and asked to answer questions during a discussion or search for information online. For example, when scheduling a meeting, you can check the weather or find out what interesting events are happening that day. Or ask Bing to provide arguments from the internet. The Bing chatbot is now available in the Bing mobile search app and through the Microsoft Edge browser for Android and iOS. Microsoft has also added voice input to the chatbot—you can send voice queries in both the mobile and desktop versions. In the future, Microsoft plans to integrate the chatbot into its other communication services, such as the Teams corporate messenger.

2019. Skype adds features for working with important messages

Nowadays, Skype is used mainly for video calls, but it also wants to be useful as a messenger. Of course, it’s not yet realistic to displace Viber and WhatsApp in their field, so Skype is looking for new niches. In the latest update, the developers added slightly unusual features for the messenger - drafts and bookmarks. Drafts allow you to save a started message to return to it later and finish it. Bookmarks allow you to save received messages to quickly find them later. Obviously, both of these features are intended for working with important messages. Perhaps Skype wants to create a new niche - something between messengers and email, and this could be useful for business users.

2014. Telegram attracts business users

Mobile messaging apps have been rapidly proliferating lately, luring users away from social networks. The same will soon happen in the business sector – corporate Viber apps will replace corporate Facebooks. Telegram (created by VKontakte founder Pavel Durov) initially focused on privacy and security, which is likely why it was the first to be adopted by business users. In a recent interview, Pavel boasted that more and more workgroups are using Telegram for collaboration instead of email. He believes that, in addition to encryption, business users appreciate Telegram's ability to sync messages and files between the mobile and desktop versions, display message statuses (read or not), and organize large group chats.
