2025. Upwork now offers AI-powered video interviews

Freelance platform Upwork has introduced a new feature Instant Interviews, powered by the AI bot Uma, designed to help employers streamline the initial candidate screening process. Uma can now automate the entire interview process on behalf of clients, conducting a full assessment of each candidate based on employer questions, summarizing the results, and offering recommendations. Employers can also view video interviews of candidates they are interested in. Upwork believes that AI-powered interviews will also benefit freelancers, allowing them to find jobs faster and conduct interviews at their convenience. The company also noted that freelancers will be able to demonstrate skills that cannot be fully reflected in cover letters.
2020. LinkedIn Adds AI Interview Training Tool

LinkedIn has announced a new AI-powered tool that helps job seekers practice answers to common interview questions. The technology is borrowed from PowerPoint's Presenter Coach feature, which helps candidates choose the right tempo, tone, and focus. To use the feature, LinkedIn users record and upload videos of themselves answering popular questions. The program provides feedback: it highlights filler words and their frequency, identifies swear words and inappropriate phrases, and determines speech tempo and voice modulation. The AI also provides suggestions for improving your speech to better understand facts and figures and eliminate inappropriate expressions.
2017. Skype adds feature for remote interviews

Companies often hire developers remotely and conduct preliminary interviews with them over Skype. Noticing this, Skype decided to improve this process by adding the Interview feature, which allows for collaborative coding. This allows the interviewer to assign coding tasks to the programmer, review the result, and also make notes in real time to draw the interviewer's attention to errors. All major programming languages are supported, including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Python, and Ruby. The code editor runs in the web interface on Skype.com. You click the "Start Interview" button and send a link to the interviewee. There is no need to install the application on the computer or additional plugins.

Firstly, the candidate is in their "home" environment, in familiar surroundings, and feels more relaxed. Secondly, knowing about the upcoming video interview in advance allows them to thoroughly prepare – recording several trial videos to assess themselves and avoid any embarrassing interview mistakes (ooVoo includes a video message recording feature). Furthermore, video interviews eliminate factors that could trigger a negative emotional reaction. For example, during a regular interview, such factors could include the applicant being late for a number of reasons or the employer being late before the meeting.
