2026. DeepL launches a real-time voice translation feature

DeepL has released an application and a toolkit for real-time voice translation. With the help of the DeepL Voice for Conversations mobile app, people who speak different languages can create a temporary room and communicate offline with simultaneous translation (even in a noisy environment). DeepL also launches additional integrations for Zoom and Microsoft Teams platforms. Users can either listen to the translation in real time or read the text on the screen. The company also introduced an API that allows third-party developers and businesses to create their own solutions based on DeepL technologies. Of course, you won't surprise anyone with simultaneous translation, but DeepL advertises itself as the most accurate translator, without hallucinations.
2025. Google Meet can now translate a foreign language in real-time

Video conferencing service Google Meet has introduced a new AI-based feature that allows you to translate the speech of your interlocutor in real time – and immediately by voice. So far, it only translates from English and Spanish, but Google promises to add more languages in the coming weeks. The feature preserves the speaker’s original voice and conveys intonation and emotions, which can facilitate international communication. The translator is already available in beta for $20 per month and will soon be introduced in Workspace business accounts.
2024. Copilot in Teams will be able to provide simultaneous translation

Microsoft has introduced new AI agents for its Office suite. Copilot in Teams will provide real-time simultaneous (oral) translation during meetings, mimicking the user's voice. It can also summarize Teams meetings, create weekly reports, review and answer questions based on visual content shared on the screen during a meeting, and provide a brief overview of a sent file. Copilot in PowerPoint can translate entire presentations into one of 40 languages while maintaining the overall design of each slide. Copilot in Outlook can help schedule a face-to-face meeting with a colleague by reviewing both calendars to find the best time.
2020. Cisco Webex gets virtual assistant, real-time translation and speech-to-text
This year, online video conferencing systems (Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet) have seen such a surge in popularity that market veteran Cisco Webex needs to come up with something to compete with their (free) offerings. In the new version of the system, Cisco is focusing on intelligent features. Now, the Webex Assistant virtual assistant acts as a full-fledged meeting participant. You can contact it at any time and give it a task: adjust the volume, add a note, start recording, and more. Webex also now features intelligent noise reduction, speech-to-text conversion, auto-captioning, and real-time translation into 10 languages, including Russian, will be available in the next two months. Cisco also introduced the Webex Desk Camera, an intelligent camera with facial recognition and gesture control.
2018. Skype and PowerPoint got real-time subtitles
PowerPoint and Skype are getting real-time captions and subtitles in 2019. The new feature allows those who are deaf or hard of hearing to read the words that are spoken during presentations in PowerPoint or video calls in Skype. The subtitles also allow speakers to include a translation of a presentation. Live captions and subtitles will support 12 spoken languages and display on-screen in more than 60 different languages. Presenters will be able to customize the appearance of subtitles to match a presentation, and the speech recognition should adapt for more accurate terminology based on context. In Skype subtitles will be available in one-to-one video-calls. Once turned on, they will auto-scroll during the call, but Microsoft says it’s working to offer other viewing options in the future. Specifically, Skype will soon allow you to scroll through the captions in a side window.
2016. Skype now offers simultaneous translation for calls to any phone number

At the end of last year, Skype added built-in translator that can translate conversations in real time during video chats. This translator is now available for calls to landlines and mobile phones, even to older phones with drums. Before making a call, you select the translation language, and as soon as the caller picks up, they'll hear a short message in their language informing them that the call is being recorded and automatically translated. As a reminder, Skype already supports Russian for translation, along with English, Spanish, Chinese, Italian, French, Portuguese, German, and Arabic.
