2018. An easy way to conduct a DDoS attack on Linux systems discovered

Security researchers from Carnegie Mellon University have discovered a dangerous vulnerability (SegmentSmack) in recent Linux kernel versions that allows for a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack, potentially causing system crashes. Furthermore, the attacker requires very little bandwidth to successfully carry out the attack. According to Red Hat, there is currently no effective patch for the vulnerability. The issue can be resolved with a kernel update. Researchers have published an extensive list of hardware and software vendors whose solutions could potentially be affected by SegmentSmack. It includes major companies such as Amazon, Apple, AT&T, Cisco, D-Link, Google, IBM, Intel, and many others. However, the vulnerability in these vendors' products has not yet been officially confirmed.

2016. F5 introduces new solutions to protect against targeted attacks

F5 has introduced two products: F5 DDoS Hybrid Defender and F5 SSL Orchestrator - designed to enhance protection and help customers quickly deploy their chosen solution. These new products provide quick and easy problem resolution, high visibility, deep traffic analysis, and the proper protection of company data and assets. F5 DDoS Hybrid Defender is an all-in-one security solution that protects IT infrastructure through multi-layered protection against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks at the network, session, and application levels, combined with a cloud-based traffic scrubbing service redirected from the client resource for scrubbing. This DDoS protection approach helps filter out illegitimate requests to ensure the uninterrupted operation of servers or websites.

2012. Check Point has introduced new line of DDoS Protector devices

Check Point has introduced a new line of devices designed to combat distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. The new DDoS Protector devices provide multi-layered protection and throughput of up to 12 Gbps, allowing companies to prevent a wide range of DDoS attacks, including network floods, server floods, application-layer DoS attacks, and low-and-slow attacks, Check Point said in a statement. According to the developers, the following components provide protection against network attacks and excessive traffic: Behavioral DoS — protection against TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP, and fragment DDoS attacks through their detection; DoS Shield — protection against known DDoS attacks based on the use of standard and custom filters that limit the rate within certain patterns; SYNProtection — blocking DoS attacks disguised as SYN by limiting the synchronization rate for protected servers; Black List — blocks standard attacks using L3 and L4 source address classifications; Connection Rate Limit — blocks unsupported protocols (not DNS or HTTP) and application-level flooding attacks by setting a rate threshold.
