2026. Google stimulates clicks from AI Overviews to sites

It seems that Google is beginning to understand that AI Overviews in search is, if not a dead-end branch of development, then at least too much distraction from websites. And this only increases the number of delusional people (due to inevitable hallucinations) and, as programmers say, accumulates technical debt. Therefore, in the next search update in AI Overviews and AI Mode, source websites will now be displayed with larger favicons, and when hovering over any favicon, a list of source websites will appear. Google says that "this will allow users to go directly to the site faster to get more information." They say that during testing, the new interface demonstrated higher user engagement and simplified access to quality content on the network.
2025. Slack adds AI to search, transcripts and chat summary

Enterprise messaging app Slack has expanded its search capabilities with AI features, including voice message transcripts and chat summaries, as well as short AI summaries of channels and discussions. Using AI, Slack now lets you search across chat channels, as well as connected apps (like Google Drive, Salesforce and Microsoft Teams). Huddles (voice and video chat features) also includes call transcripts and summaries. The AI automatically highlights key phrases in conversations. You can also get a short summary of another user’s profile, showing their role and recent work. Or get a summary of all the messages in which you are mentioned.
2023. AI search engine Perplexity AI raises $25.6M

Perplexity AI, a startup developing a search engine with chatbot answers that identifies sources and suggests similar queries, has raised $25.6 million. The service differs from a typical search engine in that it does not have any other links to websites. Users can view a short or detailed answer, as well as interact with sources—delete, add new ones, and follow links. In addition to its website, Perplexity AI has a Google Chrome extension that allows, for example, summarizing ideas from articles. The startup has also launched a free iOS app. Interestingly, in March 2023, Adept, a developer in the same field, raised $350 million, and Character.AI raised $150 million.
2023. Microsoft launches new Bing and Edge browser with ChatGPT

Microsoft is pulling out all the stops in an effort to better compete with Google. The company has announced its long-rumored integration of OpenAI’s GPT-4 model into Bing, providing a ChatGPT-like experience within the search engine. As expected, the new Bing now features the option to start a chat in its toolbar, which then brings you to a ChatGPT-like conversational experience. Microsoft is also launching a new version of its Edge browser, with these new AI features built into the sidebar. With the new browser, web users are able to do things like summarize search results with AI’s help and converse with AI chatbots to get their questions answered, among other things.
