24.07.25. Proton unveils confidential AI assistant

Proton (the secure email, file storage and VPN provider) unveiled its AI assistant, Lumo, which also positions itself as private and secure. The company claims that Lumo is powered by its own open-source models (rather than the APIs of cloud platforms like ChatGPT) and does not use user data for training. Furthermore, the chatbot does not store conversation logs, uses end-to-end encryption for chat storage, and offers an disappearing message mode. Lumo is available through a web client, as well as through apps for Android and iOS. An account is not required to use the chatbot or ask questions, but if you have an account, such as Proton Drive, you can ask Lumo questions in the context of your files stored in the cloud. Although the chatbot has internet access, it may not find recent search results.
2024. ProtonMail gats AI assistant for writing emails

Proton has released a new AI-powered email writing assistance tool called Proton Scribe. This tool helps users compose, edit and proofread emails before sending using simple suggestions. This is Proton's latest move to replicate Google's productivity products and features (last month, Google introduced Gemini AI for Gmail, which helps write and summarize emails). Proton Scribe is based on the Mistral 7B model from the French startup Mistral, which is open-sourced under the GPL-3.0 license, making it easy to conduct third-party security and privacy audits. Furthermore, Proton Scribe can run entirely on-premises, ensuring the protection of company data.
2023. Proton Mail introduced email client for Mac and Windows

Secure email service ProtonMail has introduced desktop applications for Windows and MacOS. While the service has been available to desktop users for nearly a decade (first via a web interface and later through third-party email clients Outlook and Thunderbird), the new dedicated desktop application eliminates the need for browsers and middleware. Thus, Proton provides its users with end-to-end email encryption, including offline access. The desktop application includes Proton Calendar, which also supports end-to-end encryption.
